John J. Shanahan, 82, passed away peacefully on November 13th at Stamford Hospital after a long illness. His life was marked by his humor, wit, and the deep connections he forged with those around him.
Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, John was the loving son of the late Joseph and Virginia (nee Bissert) Shanahan and was sadly predeceased by his brother Joseph and Niece, Laura.
John is survived by the love of his life and devoted Spouse of 50 years, Helen (Salvador) Shanahan, his adoring sister, Clare Shanahan Shanley, Sister-in-law, Rica (Sidney) and so many cherished Nephews and Nieces – James (Maiana), Elizabeth, Gerald (Clara), Ryan, Lauren, Jennifer, Deborah – as well as by his devoted caretaker, Evangeline.
Educated at St. Nicholas of Tolentine and later at St. Francis College, John was well-versed in a variety of subjects, but had a particular passion for politics, history, and classic movies. His ability to recall every line from his favorite films on Turner Classic Movies brought joy and entertainment to many gatherings as well as to the nightly calls with his sister.
John worked at Dunn & Bradstreet and later at Stamford Hospital for over 30 years. He was also a devoted parishioner of St. Bridget of Ireland Church where a mass will soon be held in his honor followed by a Celebration of his life. Donations may be made to the Church at 278 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford, CT 06902. The family would like to thank Dr. Felix DeJesus Roman and all at Stamford Hospital for their care.
Throughout his life, John left a legacy of laughter, learning, and an unquenchable curiosity about the world and history. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the memories he created with his friends and family.
Our lives are not measured in years, but are measured in the lives of people we touch around us. John surely touched us all with his humor and unconditional love.
