William George Hewig, Age 88, of Trumbull, CT our beloved father passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Civita Care Center in Milford, CT. Bill was born on February 8, 1936, in Mount Vernon, Bronx, NY, the son of the late Henry and Veronica Degman Hewig. He served his country proudly with the U.S. Airforce stationed in Germany, as a Communications Lieutenant, Technical Control Squad 106, during the Berlin crisis. Bill was employed with Sturm, Ruger & Co. in Southport, CT for over 45 years and with Bridgeport Machines, Bridgeport, CT until fully retiring at age 79.
Our father was known for his kind and compassionate heart, and he cared for both of his
predeceased spouses, who had endured long illnesses while they were married, and he was frequently seen helping family, friends and neighbors. He enjoyed recreational fishing, tinkering with gadgets, keeping fish tanks, watching old movies, riding his moped scooter, handcrafting recreational model airplanes and boats, he took pride in his cars over the years, he enjoyed eating out at a nice restaurant, and occasionally playing a scratch card or two. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his wife, Carol, his high school sweetheart.
Survivors include his children, Michael R. Hewig of Oxford, CT, Heidi Proffetty of Bridgewater, MA, Tammy Hewig of New Bedford, MA and by his stepdaughter, Sarah Kennedy of Meriden, CT. By his 7 grandchildren Erin Proffetty, Tina Proffetty, Jared Conant, Christopher Conant, Samantha Conant, Cheyanne Williams and Christopher Kennedy. By his nephews, William F. Hewig and his wife Jody of Monroe, Fred N. Hewig and his wife Suzanne of Trumbull, and Henry John Hewig. By his nieces, Susan Mary Hewig-Benway and her husband Troy of Milford, and Dawn, Jane and Doreen Hewig. By his nephew and niece’s children, Kristen Micelli, Michele Hewig, Melissa Gabainelli, William J. Hewig, Charles A. Hewig and Fred C. Grace; their two children Morgan Micelli and Aubrey B. Grace.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol Goyette Hewig of Trumbull and by his former beloved wife Mary Rotunda, by his brothers Frederick D. Hewig and his wife Rosemary Cocivi Hewig, and Henry John Hewig Jr. and his wife Janice.
Family and friends will be invited in the spring to attend the burial services with military honors to be held at Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield, followed by celebration of life gathering.
